Kanto region (関東地方) is one of the two main plains of Japan with the Kinki. Kantô area is the most populated region of Japan.

Kanto refers to the time when the control points were located on Tôkaido road. Tô (東) corresponds to the east of Hakone control point (関所).

This region encompasses 7 prefectures: Chiba, Gunma, Ibaraki, Kanagawa, Saitama, Tochigi, and Tokyo.

The kanto became after the Kinki the nerve-center of Japan, first during the Kamakura period, then during the Edo period until now since the current capital, Tokyo, is located in Kanto.
